"Catch: The Hold Not Taken" [2004] - 60 min's

Tracing the roots of Lancashire ‘Catch-as-catch-can’ wrestling and its subsequent evolution, which has influenced both amateur and professional wrestling & examining its relationship with modern MMA.

It began as the sport of Lancashire miners. By the early 20th century it had grown to become one of the most popular spectator sports in the world and had been introduced into the Olympics. However, as wrestling gradually became more of a work, the essence of the true sport was lost.

In addition to referencing training facilities in the locality, the film focuses in particular on the renowned Riley's ‘Snake Pit’ in Wigan, Lancashire, where Karl Gotch spent 2 years learning his craft before exporting the style to the U.S and eventually to Japan.
It examines how the ancient sport of wrestling is once again proving its effectiveness as a fighting art. Includes interviews with; John Rigby MBE, Jimmy Niblett, Roy Wood, Tony Francis, Dan Gable, Dan Severn & Tatsumi Fujinami

Catch As Catch Can Wrestling with Billy Robinson  (DVD-9)

As one of the few surviving men with the knowledge and ability to do so, Billy Robinson made it his mission to pass on the craft and techniques of ‘the violent art’ CACC wrestling. The origins of ‘Catch’ in England can be traced back over 1500 years. Originating in the County of Palatine (Lancashire/Cumbria) the style taught to Billy at Riley’s renowned Snakepit Gym in Wigan, known as ‘Lancashire Catch As Catch Can’, is now accepted as a legitimate martial art & arguably one of the most vicious and dangerous at that. Based on bodily mechanics, it utilises technique and leverage more than brute strength and encourages counter holds, as opposed to out & out defensive techniques. Whilst Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become very popular, widely used by MMA practitioners, Billy maintained that it has largely mimicked CACC, but lacks some of the effectiveness. Billy trained “The Gracie hunter” Kazushi Sakuraba in CACC. In his prime, “Saku” beat the top 4 members of the legendary Gracie family in competitive MMA contests.
This DVD covers; Billy’s return to England, where he meets with old friends, discusses some of the old-time fighters and championship belts, in addition to schooling up & coming fighters. It also contains archive footage of both him & Billy Riley training young wrestlers at “The Snakepit”. The rest of the disc has Billy in America, discussing Lancashire CACC & submission concepts, holding seminars and demonstrating; holds, throws & submission techniques. Featured; standing posture breaks, arm lock tecniques, arm drags, the double wrist lock and the dreaded Grovit...and finishes with a 10-minute exhibition match between himself and Nick Bockwinkel, from the Japanese UWFi promotion in 1992.

Dynamite Kid: A Matter of Pride

Highspots.com travelled to Manchester, England to conduct an interview with Tom Billington about his wrestling career. Prior to the interview, few people knew very much about what had happened to Dynamite Kid since his retirement and nobody had been able to unravel the myths surrounding his legacy. Perhaps more than any other wrestler, Tom Billington is a recluse, never agreeing to interviews, appearances, or even maintaining contact with his old friends from wrestling. After conducting the interview, we realised that he had an amazing story that could not be told merely in his own, humble words. With the help of a lot of generous donors through Kickstarter, we set out on a world-wide travelling endeavor to interview those that knew Dynamite Kid best and those who still keep in touch with him today. What resulted was a very emotional journey into a career cut short by the abuses of; steroids, alcohol, drugs, and a complete disregard for his own physical limitations.
Dynamite Kid was trained in the infamous Snake Pit by Ted Betely and turned the opportunity given to him by the Hart Family in Calgary, Canada into a phenomenal world-wide wrestling career. He dazzled an international audience with legendary matches against Tiger Mask, which are still a benchmark today.
Perhaps best known by modern wrestling fans as one half of The British Bulldogs, this documentary covers the unique relationship between Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith and explains why the team was on bad footing from its inception. The most talked about locker room fight in WWF history is storied for the first time by Dynamite as well as all the other key locker room figures of that time.
Dynamite Kid was considered to be 20 years ahead of his time and his influence is still very visible today. This documentary digs deeper and gets to the heart of this complex wrestling revolutionary.
